11 Ways to Turn Your Cubicle Into a Sanctuary

If you work in an office, chances are you spend just as much, if not more, time in your office space than you do at home.  So shouldn't that time be spent in an environment that promotes your healthy lifestyle?  Here are 11 simple ways to bring balance and harmony into your work day:

1. Keep it clean.

Electronics attract dust! Dust and clean frequently, and try a product like Mrs. Meyers that is free of harsh chemicals and relaxing scents like, lavender.

2. Declutter

Limit what you have on your desk, and use organizers to combat paper pile up. Keep it simple and don’t over decorate.

3. Don’t turn your back on the office.

If possible arrange your desk so your back isn’t turned toward the cube opening. If that is not possible hang a mirror to have a view of what is going on behind you.

4. Make it functional

Arrange drawers so that everything is easily accessible and flows by order of usage.

5. Ditch the chair

Opt for a standing desk or use a fitness ball to reduce back pain.

6. Bring in small potted plants

Combat stuffy and stale air with potted plants. Some recommended choices include:

- The Peace Lilly is one of the best indoor air purifiers and is tolerant of low light settings.

- Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) will turn any space into relaxing sanctuary, and it’s so low maintenance it only requires stones and water to flourish.

-The African Violet is a great option for a pop of color and will flourish under florescent lights.

7. Use Wallpaper

Grey is so well grey…Attach wallpaper or decorative paper with velcro or push pins. Favor colors like soft blues and greens that promote focus and calmness, or a light orange for more energy. Avoid busy patterns, and colors such as yellow, red, or black.

8. Combat florescent Lighting

Bring in a couple of soft lamps to help diffuse the harsh overhead lighting.

9. Bring in peaceful sounds

Tune out the buzz and hum of electronics and lights with a small fountain or a natural sounds cd. Of course be courteous of neighbors and use headphones if necessary.

10. Get grounded

Don’t forget the floor! Use a bamboo mat or simple rug to soften the look and feel of your cube.

11. Keep a yoga mat tucked away in a corner for break room yoga sessions!
